Help set up and take down Dancing and other events.
Just come a few minutes early or stay late and speak to the coordinator or leader of the event.
Let us know by phone or email if you are interested in serving in some capacity during our special retreats or events. In some cases this service can be in exchange for all or partial scholarship for
event fees. Just be sure to let us know as far ahead of time as possible.
In the past, some of these services have included catering services, housekeeping, providing decorations or flowers, registration assistance and books, or even being a "gofer" and transportation provider.
If you have a special skill, let us know!
From time to time we have needed volunteers with skills in recording audio or video of events.
Musicianship. The requirement is less for professional-level skills than for flexibility and attunement to the Dances and related practices. Those who accompany us are highly valued, and our work has strong precedents in the mysticism of sound vibrations. Hazrat Inayat Khan wrote volumes on this subject and was a classical Indian musician.
A musician must be able to improvise since there is often no scoring and the dance set may change at any minute. Being a good listener responsive to other musicians and the Dance leaders is more necessary than technical proficiency. Musicians must be able to keep grounded while playing.
The guitars are ordinarily played in "open tuning" which allows the musician to play melody without knowing advanced chords. A majority of the dances can be playing in this tuning. Guitars in standard tuning are a delightful addition, as a second option, for one guitarist or more.
Instruments that carry the melody can be very helpful to the dance leader and add a great dimension, including violin, flute, cello, etc.
Drums are usually dumbeks or frame drums (tar) and the drummers usually play small percussion instruments as well.
If you are musical and would like to experience playing for us, please identify yourself to the dance leader (Latifa Till) or one of the musicians. If it can be accommodated, you might be invited to attend rehearsals to experience how you blend in with the core musicians. You might be the next essential musician, freeing up our dance leader to concentrate on leading!
